NEW Survey Debunks OLD Stereotype

For years, a stereotype has been fostered by the media, and now social media, that older people are just not that savvy when it comes to new technology. 

This false perception contributes to age discrimination that affects the older job seeker.

Two companies,  DROPBOX and Ipsos Mori, have surveyed more than 4,000 information workers in the U.S. and Europe about their use of technology in the workplace. 

The survey has revealed that workers aged 55+ are actually less stressed using technology in the workplace than their younger peers. The results also showed that older workers are actually BETTER at using multiple devices than their younger peers - only 13% of respondents aged 55+  reported having trouble working with multiple devices compared to 37% of 18-to-34-year olds.

5 Ways to Find a Job on LinkedIn

Are you making the most of LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is a professional networking site which offers unique features for both businesses and job seekers:

• Businesses can easily post jobs, find prospective clients and check references. 
• Job Seekers: A good knowledge of this platform gives you a great chance of getting a job within the shortest time possible.

Here are five major ways to find a job in just sixty days on Linkedin

#1 Make Yourself Easily Found on LinkedIn: According to a survey, 90% of recruiters and their sources ( both within companies and external headhunting agencies) make use of LinkedIn to spot ideal candidates. And for several reasons these recruiters prefer sourcing for talents rather than assisting desperate job seekers. In other words, you have to make them come to you by making yourself easily found on the platform. You can achieve this in several ways including:

• Creating a strong and compelling profile summary.
• Completing your employment history.
• Completing all other sections of your profile such as education, certifications and more.
• Including samples of your work to showcase your accomplishments.
• Joining groups and participate in discussions.
• Properly filling out the skills section of your profile

#2 Job Board: The LinkedIn’s job board offers you several ways to access the numerous ads posted by recruiters and employers. They get paid for featuring these ads on their site and others that the site aggregates from across the internet.LinkedIn leads you through a process whereby you can create your profile of the kind of job you seek based on the industry, location and more. You are allowed to edit your profile at will, but that also determines the type of ads you will get from LindkedIn. Another way of getting applicable positions is by clicking on ‘Advanced’ at the LinkedIn’s homepage. After this, click on ‘Jobs’, and filter jobs through keywords, location, title, country and more. However, when conducting an advanced search, it is advisable to avoid searching on title, as different firms have different titles for the same role.

#3 Group Jobs: With LinkedIn, you can join up to 100 groups at once. These groups are numerous and each based on anything imaginable such as hobbies, location, school alumni, industry and more. Each of these groups has its own menu structure which includes; discussion, promotion, jobs members and search.The job menu in each group is meant for job listing which could be posted by any of the group member as well as job discussions. This makes making it faster for you to find a new job.

#4: Company Pages: All you have to do here is to search for companies. Typically, on a company’s page, there will be a listing of vacant positions at the company or a link to the company’s employment portal on its site where the open jobs listing is provided. When you find a job opening it is advisable NOT to simply apply to multiple jobs in a relatively short period by clicking on ‘Apply’ numerous times. Instead, take your time by checking each good job prospect. Make use of the features provided by LinkedIn to see who posted the job and who you may know that works in the company. Develop these contacts into networking partners. Most companies use employee referral bonus program. You will be at an advantaged position if your company contact brings your resume to the attention of the recruiting manager or human resources staffer assigned to fill the position. Consequently, the probability of your resume disappearing into thin air is minimized and your chances of getting the job significantly increased.

#5 Feed Update: Updates are at the center of your LinkedIn homepage. What you will get here are not just articles that the Pulse feature thinks you should be interested in but also the status updates of your contacts or connections. Take your time to scroll through these updates on a regular basis as there are often some posts from hiring managers or recruiters calling the attention of qualified job seekers to some vacant positions in their respective companies

Hiring Managers Seeing More Lies on Resumes

Editor's Note: In a survey of 3,500 employees by HireRight, it was reported that 88% of those tested had lied on their resume compared with 70% five years ago. In this article in Fortune, Anne Fisher interviews Mary O’Loughlin, HireRight’s vice president of global customer experience, to find out why people are exaggerating on their resumes.

Yet another reason for inventing whole chunks of a CV: Embarrassment about having lost a job to the recession. “Candidates think there is a huge stigma attached to unemployment,” notes O’Loughlin. “So they make up things to fill that gap in their work history.”

Staying Motivated in this "Bad News World"

(Editor's note) We've recently been deluged with abhorrent news reports in rapid succession. There have been hundreds of innocent lives senselessly lost in the United States and all over the world. Political debates and elections are in progress which could have a profound effect on our future. We feel powerless and don't know where we stand globally. And In the midst of this turmoil, you may be in a career change or a job search. How is it even possible to focus or stay motivated with all of this chaos around you? Life Coach Shawn Doyle shares four tips to help you stay motivated during these tumultuous times:

1. Set a bad news budget — If you want to get and stay motivated, I strongly recommend limiting the time spent reading or watching negative stories. Look I’m not an ostrich, and I’m not burying my head in the sand — I know that there is violence and terrorism in the world. If a horrific story comes up I will find out what happened, but once I get the gist of it, I move on. I do not dwell on the sad horrific details and read all of the eyewitness reports on the horror that happened. The result of doing that is just depressing and it brings you down. So I strongly recommend that you create a bad news budget and spend a very short amount of time each day on reviewing the news then move on to something positive.

"Optimizing LinkedIn Profiles for Job Search" 

 LinkedIn continues to gain momentum as a resource utilized by both internal and external recruiters to find well qualified candidates. A quality LinkedIn profile is quickly becoming an essential element of a complete career marketing package.


Like a resume, a LinkedIn profile serves as a summary of your work history. Both your resume and your LinkedIn profile need to be well-organized, well thought out, and well written. Although a resume will typically go into greater detail of accomplishments, a LinkedIn profile needs to offer enough facts to drive further action by recruiters.

As every job seeker is hopefully aware, when resumes are submitted to corporations or job boards, they are then filtered by Applicant Tracking Software.(ATS) The software looks for “key words” to decide which of the thousands of resumes being reviewed, deserves a personal review by the recruiting or hiring manager. There are great resources on the Internet to help job seekers identify for inclusion, commonly searched key words utilized by ATS systems. These resources will be make specific keyword suggestions based on the position a job seeker is targeting. However, in the end, once the resume is submitted, it is a bit of a “black box” in terms of how your resume is actually parsed. So although, you may attempt to include all the right keywords to go to the top of the pile, a candidate is never really sure how a particular ATS system will treat their resume.

Conversely, LinkedIn profiles are not a black box. A simple audit will allow you to see which queries bring your profile to the first few pages of a search. Try it.

• Go to the peoples tab and hit advanced search.
• Now enter a keyword or keywords associated with your targeted position. Ex: customer service manager
• Now enter a geography zip code and a distance quotient. 50 miles is a reasonable choice.
• Then select an industry or multiple industries that apply to you. Understand the broader you make your search the lower your ranking will be.
• Now hit search. Can you find yourself in the first few pages of the LinkedIn results?

Now look at the top few names that have appeared and open their profiles. By looking at the highlighted words, you will see the criteria that LinkedIn used to filter the search. As of today, LinkedIn appears to scan only four categories: Professional Headline, Titles, Specialties and Industries. LinkedIn scans these categories for frequency of the keywords selected. In our example: customer service manager.

So what do you do with this information? The simple answer is optimize these four LinkedIn categories with the keywords that you believe a recruiter would most likely use when looking to fill the employment position you are targeting. If you invest an hour to insert the keywords to make sure you show up in the first few pages of a LinkedIn search for the position, geography and industry you are targeting, you will increase your chances of being found.

Now remember, a quality job search strategy encompasses both pull and push marketing. Optimizing your LinkedIn profile is only one important component of a “pull marketing” job search strategy. Never forget as a job seeker, you should focus the majority of your time and effort on a “push marketing” campaign focused on targeted job search networking.

Bored With Your Job? Get Out Of Your Rut.

What is the Velvet Rut?

The ‘Velvet Rut’ is where you find yourself in an unfulfilling job in which you are not learning anything new, not using the full extent of your skills and are just bored stiff.
You probably disconnected several months ago and are now just going through the motions. The work is no longer stretching. You can do most of it with your eyes closed so you are unlikely to get fired for poor performance.

Your level of competence and familiarity with the job means that, while it is not exciting, it isn’t scary either. You are pretty much marking time. The difference between the ‘Velvet Rut’ and any normal rut, is that the pay and benefits are very good. You couldn’t get the same amount of money for such an easy life anywhere else.


The longer you stay, the more comfortable the environment becomes because you know the organization inside out and can therefore work the system. You thus minimize the risk of anything unexpected happening or of being faced with difficult situations.
Seniority and good relationships leave you well placed politically, so the pay rises and good bonuses keep coming. You are also too expensive to make redundant because of your long service. You might feel as if your brain is shrinking and sometimes want to scream at the tedium and banality of it all but, in the final analysis, they are paying you way too much for you to pack it in and do something else.


Investment banks and other large City firms often have lots of people in ‘Velvet Ruts’ in financial and also support services like HR and IT. They pay people large amounts of money but many stay because they have effectively priced themselves out of the market but will be doing exactly the same stuff next year and the year after.
If you get really bored, you can compensate for the lack of stimulation at work by finding it in in your spare time. It is no coincidence that many people who are in ‘Velvet Ruts’ are  also the community activists, charity organizers, residents’ association committee members and hobby-club newsletter writers that the rest of us rely upon so much. Even the ‘Velvet Rut’, it seems, has some social benefits.

Are you in  Velvet Rut and how do you get out of one?
The ‘Velvet Rut’ is difficult to get out of ( which is exactly why it has been named this!) and often it’s only an external shove, such as redundancy or health problems, that moves people on. However, if you have finally come to the realization that there is more to life and your career than just money, then you can definitely do something positive to get out of one.
