Mailing Your Resume is Effective:Comment of the Day

42 and Looking said... in reference to Interns over 40 article:  10 Ways To Make Your Cover Letter Stand out

FYI to those who think mailing (sic:resumes) isn't worth it: I just mailed 217 covers/resumes to recruiting offices in the Midwest.
"I've received more calls, e-mails and one on one service in the last 10 days than I did in the whole first 5 months of my search."
Think about it...you don't just drop into the electronic void, they have to contact you and request the electronic copy. Have to say mailing worked great for me.

Is this old school thinking or just smart job marketing? What to you think?

  1. It would be more relevant to discover if this method actually achieved results, i.e., in the form of interviews or job offers. Generating more activity is one thing, but it doesn't necessarily get you any closer to your objective.

  2. Depends on the field you are in I guess. I can honestly tell you, in my field...they wont call you or even notice you are alive. They will throw it away! I know this because I have experienced it time and time again. And, I have talked to many HR reps. They have a protocol and they want it followed to the "T". They want you to apply to a job on their website. Even if you belong to Careerbuilder.com or Monster.com, most of them want you to apply online. And some of their sites even say, no in-person contact or US Mail, you must apply online.
I live on the East Coast.

  4. I have some strange experience. Wherever I had applied in company itself, I didn't get call from organization.

  5. I have some strange experience, I wonder I never got a call from any company where ever I approached through their websites. Sometimes when I asked about it I got a reply that you should only approach to them through leading job search sites.
