Editor's Note: There are subtle things younger people say and do that demean older people every day. TV ads are glutted with culturally and technically out-of-touch older people. If you're over 40 (yes, it starts young), and looking for a new job or making a career change, these negative stereotypes can create barriers and close off opportunities.This is age discrimination:

Saying an older job applicant wouldn’t be a good “cultural fit.”
What exactly is a good cultural fit anyway? If most of the office is comprised of people who don’t have family obligations to rush home to, does that mean no one can? We’d remind you that there was a time when a black or Latino hire wouldn’t have been a good cultural fit because they weren’t allowed to join the local country club to play golf. But civil rights laws presumably changed all that and an employer today wouldn’t dream of applying this standard to a racial or ethnic group. 
Isn’t having age diversity an equally good thing? People of different ages bring different perspectives to a job. By 2020, 35 percent of the population will be age 50 or older. Who better to suggest products and services to bring to market than those who understand the needs of 35 percent of the population best? Doesn’t that make more sense than worrying if the new hire will participate in Karaoke night with the office crowd?

NYT: Job Hunting in the Digital Age

(Editor's Note) This article, from The New York Times by Tara Siegel Bernard, is targeting a younger audience, but the message is applicable to job seekers of all ages. It is important to understand that 21st century technology has changed job hunting strategies. If you are in a career transition and not paying attention to sites liked Linkedin or to keywords in your resume, you could be sabotaging your job search.

"Make sure you are carefully reviewing the job description and aligning your experience and transferable skills based on what the organization is looking for, said Mercy Eyadial, Associate Vice President of Career Development and Corporate Development and at Wake Forest University. If you don't, you risk not showing up in the list of potential candidates for consideration which is often based on keyword searches."

The Only New Year's Resolution for 2017

 Believe in Yourself. 

Here we go again... lose weight, get out of debt, drink less, get fit, get a new job. The list goes on and on. Did you know that of the 45% of Americans who usually make New Year's Resolutions, only 8% are actually successful? 

One reason could be that the New Year's Resolution is win or lose, without a plan or strategy to reach the finish line

So, prepare for success by setting goals instead of resolutions. Take some time to evaluate and prioritize your intentions and objectives for the future. Be sure to write them all down. Dr. Gail Mathews, Ph. D. from the Dominican University,  did a comprehensive research study and  found three key elements to successful goal setting:

1. Most significantly, those with written goals achieved almost 50% more of their goals than those who did not write them down
2. A public commitment to a goal
3. Accountability to a friend, family member, mentor

Be sure to reward yourself along the way and celebrate each victory. If you are in career transition, celebrate along the way: new job skills, revised resume, updated media and social skills,  each phone interview,  in-person interview and finally, the job offer! Keep us posted!

Editor's Note: In this article published in The Atlantic, research shows that people who have been out of work for at least six months are more likely to suffer from depression than those with jobs. Even sadder - often, people who find work after extended periods of unemployment lose their jobs within the first year, and the theory for their job loss is debilitating depression.

“Your whole life your job defines who you are,” Yundra Thomas told The New York Times two summers ago. “All of the sudden that’s gone, and you don’t know what to take pride in anymore.”
... A new poll from Gallup ...finds that "unemployed Americans are more than twice as likely as those with full-time jobs to say they currently have or are being treated for depression—12.4 percent vs. 5.6 percent, respectively." Moreover, for those who have been unemployed for 27 weeks or more (the "long-term unemployed," currently numbering 3.4 million people), the depression rate is 18 percent, nearly one in five."
