04/16/10 Good news for those who are having a difficult time trying to find a new job. A short term solution has been resolved to the unemployment benefits issue through early June. This Legislation was approved by the Senate and signed by the President. It will extend through June 2 unemployment insurance for people who have exhausted their state paid unemployment benefits.
"We have a responsibility to make sure out-of-work Americans can still access the vital safety-net programs they need to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table while Congress works to pass a longer-term solution," said Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus(D-Montana)
The measure also extends the COBRA Health Insurance program . This will allow unemployed people to continue to receive the health insurance they had received from a former employer.
.
This article is misleading.
ReplyDeleteUnemployment benefits were NOT extended - only the application deadlines for applying for the federal emergency tiers were extended until June 2. For the unemployed who have exhausted all 4 tiers, additional assistance is not available.
COBRA benefits were not extended, only the COBRA subsidy expiration date was extended. When the 15 months of subsidies are exhausted, COBRA recipients will have to pay full COBRA rates.
As well, once the 18 months of COBRA benefit eligibility expires, unemployed persons have to purchase other health care insurance without any subsidy, typically at higher rates than their employer's group plans.
It has to end. The gov;'t is printing money to help some, while bringing the country down further. There's no help for small business owners that fail. They get no unemployment benefits and are turned out onto the street.
ReplyDeleteEither help all or help none. Drive out the illegals and create jobs for the 25M unemployed.
Article all wrong. Get the facts straights asap as this is misleading.

Let me guess, Stev, going by your reference to human beings as "illegals," you vote Republican. The same party that has allowed businesses to ship jobs overseas while destroying the social safety net.
ReplyDeleteSo long as such short-sighted policies continue under such propaganda-istic terms as "market freedom," we'll continue to see a race to the bottom.
