When to Hire a Career Counselor
The time to see a career counselor is when your career is fairly stable. Don't wait for the ax to fall – you can't make good career decisions in a crisis or when you're motivated purely by survival.

How to Find a Counselor or Coach
Most states don't require licenses, certifications or credentials to work in the career development field. Basically, anybody can hang a shingle and peddle their services. You'll discover an array of fees, services and capabilities. As a consumer, you'd be smart to do some preparatory work to figure out who's best for you.
Start your search by asking friends and colleagues for suggestions, or inquiring at your alma mater's career services office for a referral. Even if your college is located outside your current geographical area, it may have relationships or affiliations with schools in other locations.
Online resources include:
* The Association of Career Professionals International
* The National Career Development Association
* The Institute for Career Certification
Select a counselor or coach who's professionally trained and who has experience working with clients in your situation.
The designation "national certified career counselor," given by the National Board of Certified Counselors, signifies that a counselor has:
* Earned a graduate degree in counseling or a related professional field from a regionally accredited institution
* Completed supervised counseling experience, including career counseling
* Had at least three years of full-time career development work experience
* Passed a certification exam
While this particular program was discontinued in 1999, in 2001 the National Career Development Association offered as alternatives the designations "master career counselor" and "master career development professional." Other respected designations include "career management fellow," "career management practitioner" and "certified career master."
Reviewing credentials can help you weed out untrained practitioners. But credentials only measure a counselor's education and expertise. They don't tell you much about the counselor's personal style – so you'll want to interview three or more counselors before deciding.
Ask career counselors for detailed explanations of services, fees, time commitments and copies of their ethical guidelines. Be skeptical of services that require large up-front fees with promises of better jobs, higher salaries or speedy results.
Also ask for references from other clients, and make certain that you can end the services at any time if you're not satisfied, paying only for the services rendered. Fees range from $60 to $200 per hour or more.
In the end, the best career counseling and coaching relationships are built not only on competence, but also on chemistry. If you're going to achieve your goals, you'll need to share trust and respect with your counselor or coach.

With the unemployment rate in the Silicon Valley climbing into double digits it’s important for job seekers to look at all of their options. New graduates are joining the ranks of the recently, and not so recently, laid off making the job market more competitive than ever.
Get a leg up by taking a side step in your career and increasing your portfolio, volunteer. One of the best programs that I have found for engaging in community outreach while receiving a paycheck is AmeriCorps.
Launched in 1993 AmeriCorps is best described as a domestic Peace Corps program. With the recent authorization of the Serve America Act, signed in April, the Corporation for National and Community Service (the parent company of AmeriCorps) has increased the number of AmeriCorps positions from 75,000 to 88,000 next year and 250,000 by 2017.
Along with receiving a nominal stipend during their service AmeriCorps members who complete their term are eligible for an education award that can be applied to future college tuition or to repaying federal student loans. Current legislation could raise that award from $4,725 to $5,350, the first increase since the program started.
President Obama’s call to service along with the desire to create positive community impact has created an era where “service is a cool thing to do” says Megan O’Leary, Development Director of City Year. O’Leary goes on to state, “Asked to step up and serve people are responding,” and they responding in numbers like never before.
AmeriCorps applications reached 9,731 in February, more than three times the number for the same month last year. Beach Pace, Executive Director of City Year (which exclusively employs AmeriCorps members,) remarked, “If I were 17, I would have a better chance of getting into Stanford than getting into City Year.”

You’re a business owner and you need to hire hard-working, dependable people. You’ve heard that in your community there is a pool of talented mature workers who have much to offer. How do you tap into this tremendous asset?
You could run help wanted ads like everyone else does, but with an ad you never know who you’re going to get. Surely there must be a better way.
In many communities, there is! Here is just a sample of the hiring resources available to employers across the country. It’s likely that you’ll find something similar in your area.
· Seniors4Hire.org is a nationwide online career center and a leading Internet resource for businesses that value a diverse workforce. Business owners and HR executives can recruit workers fifty and older including retirees and senior citizens who are looking for a career change.
· The SeniorJobBank is a nationwide website used by employers to advertise their jobs to the website’s audience of talented, dedicated people over the age of fifty. Employers posting with the SeniorJobBank are committed to hiring baby boomers and mature workers. For a modest fee to the employer the site provides job postings, as well as job search, resume and job alert registration for job seekers. Career and education information is provided too.
· In Washington State, the Mature Workers Alliance of Puget Sound is an all-volunteer group of private and public organizations dedicated to empowering over-fifty workers and promoting age and experience in the workforce. They sponsor workshops and job fairs for mature workers to help them conduct successful job searches and connect to hiring employers. They also encourage businesses to recruit and retain mature workers and benefit from the experience, strong work ethic, and loyalty offered by mature workers.
